Artist Statement

Post apocalyptic, post humanity, post existence as we know it, this landscape is the moment after. The forms that are regenerating out of the rubble are the result of the continual process of growth. Morphing out of the leftovers new organic species are proliferating, hybrid monsters transforming the topography into the rich fields of a new and abstract paradigm.

With the ability to genetically modify seedlings we have the power to control the evolution of the natural world. My own fantastical creations are exaggerated prophesies of things to come.

There obviously is no place for the human form as we know it in this ‘brave new world’ their existence is left only in the form of inanimate objects or occasionally a random limb that has sprouted from an orifice. Gone too is the structure and order that once reined and in its place chaos reaps, fusing the parts, bringing together man, his inventions and the natural world in symbiosis.

I want my audience to feel the confusion, to be unsure about what it is they are witnessing, to wonder at the mystery.

I use contrast as a tool, painting precisely with a small brush in places, whilst dribbling washes in others. Using the shiny and quickly read surface of a magazine next to these laboured and very human paintbrush and sometimes fingertip marks. I Like to use the wet and alive-ness of glosses and varnishes against the dead, flatness of the bare paper behind. The blackness of the miasma cloaks the sickly sweet pinks and peaches of towering tendrils.

I am inspired by botanical illustrations as well as the works of science fiction writers and see my role as a similar one. Creating and recording a world that has ties with the hopes and fears from our own yet is a playground for our imaginations.
