Alice Maplesden

Artist Statement

My work explores ideas of the divine. It is informed by, and draws comparison to many objects of religious worship from varying countries and cultures. The pieces attempt to venerate nature, specifically the seed as the representation of ultimate potential, and the continuation of life. They try to raise it up, make it as special as it can be and worthy of devotion, discussing nature as a faith within itself.
 I am interested in the transformation of the secular into the sacred; that is why I have been using jars as the houses for my ideas. Each jar is an incubator for growth and decay, and a protector of whatever is within.

I am currently based in London, working from my attic, having recently graduated from a contemporary crafts degree in Falmouth, Cornwall.
