Artist Statement:
My images - too selective to be a documentary in the normal sense
- are visual manifestations of the life around me. My life and my photographs,
both often ironic, sometimes funny, at times raw and every so often nostalgic,
interact and influence each other.
Life pushes
us to deal with feelings and situations, wanted or unwanted and so I shoot
life with everything that life involves: happiness, loneliness, boredom,
passion, frustration, love, sex, sadness, joy and death. It's a coexistence
of ordinary duties and special moments.
I didn't
want to limit my options to a couple of topics. I wanted to broaden the
subject matter: life with everything that life involves. No censorship
and no limits.
Loneliness, happiness, boredom, frustration, love, death, sex, tranquility,
sadness...
Feelings and situations that life pushes us to deal with, wanted or unwanted,
In this way the realistic and the abstract can cohabit.
It's a coexistence of ordinary duties and special moments.
I work mainly
in color, using different techniques: digital images, disposable cameras,
computer colorized black and white negatives, videos, polaroids, vintage
family prints, scans and personal objects, among others.
Some of them are snapshots while others are heavily staged and retouched.
The way I feel determines which method I use, and that decision defines
the way I percept my surroundings. I like to use my instinct.
They are
usually shown in a mixed up manner; they don't need a thematic or harmonic
way of display, because they are about life and life changes usually come
when you don't expect them, in a shocking and unpredictable way (at least
in my life).
I usually show them in groups or in pairs, juxtaposing images with very
different content and feelings.
