Artist Statement

These photographs are cropped images of my paintings(which were exhibited at the CSM Degree Show June 2002). I have preferred to display the photographs instead of the actual art works because the camera has been more successful in focusing on the main aspects such as texture, change in color and other such subtleties. The resultant image
perhaps associates with the process of some rapid movement slowed only for a second so as to be captured on film. The ambiguities in form (and title) add further intrigue to the image and instigate a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork. Thus the enigmatic images become independent works of art. Independent from the initial artwork, an exchange in significance occurs- where the photograph of the painting becomes the exhibit and the painting itself becomes a mere fragment of documentation.

At the moment, nearly two months after graduation and free from the pressure of crits., I feel the need to temporarily distance myself from this abstract work and return to a certain art discipline which I practiced before commencing the B.A course.
Stylized Indian Art has much to do with figurative drawing and painting. Here much attention is drawn to intricate details composed of fine brush marking which creates rhythm in form and movement.
Although this kind of art is different from the former, they still share aesthetic or decorative tendencies, sensuality and soft forms.
