Artist Statement
Colin Michael can be described as a “Fauvist” due to the characteristic splashes of vibrant colours he uses to express above all his emotions and sensations. He enjoys a variety of subjects to challenge his creativity, hence the rich body of works he has produced over a number of years. “ I base my paintings on materials gathered from the subject that I am dealing with. This can be sketches, photographs, bits of coloured paper, anything that reminds me of the image and feeling of that moment in time. All my paintings are created in the studio. I work expressively and in a spontaneous manner using brushes, bits of cardboard, rags and my hands in order to gain the desired effect. After which I leave the canvas for weeks on end only returning to perform minor adjustments to light, shade.”
