Artist Statement

Born in 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland, after a few false starts and wrong turnings, I went to Duncan of Jordanstone College of art in Dundee from 1973 - 1977, Obtaining a D.A., then took a Dip.Ed. Course, also in Dundee, going on to teach art for many years. During these years, I kept up my own painting skills, taking part in many exhibitions, and have many paintings in private collections throughout Britain and also in Germany and South Africa. I now paint full time, my works primarily going for print publication in the U.S.A. and also for fine art greetings cards.

Throughout the last thirty years, although I have painted still life and figure, landscape has been my passion, my influences being the French Impressionists, particularly Monet and Sisley, and the Scottish Colourists, particularly Peploe, all of which have contributed to a rich painterly quality and a feeling for light in my work.

I have painted mostly in oils over the years and also gouache and pastel; but have recently started to use acrylics, which, due to their fast drying properties, help to speed up the process of getting from completed work to production as a print. My technique with these, however, is more or less identical to the way I work with oils; having tried them in their early days, I have found them much improved and much more pleasurable to work with, having much more of that “buttery” quality that is so enjoyable in oils. They give me the best of all worlds !
