Artist Statement My paintings are large, simplified, bold representations of women that because of the deliberate omission of context are hard to place in terms of time. I use film stills as my main source for my paintings, trying to focus on the relation between the cinematic close-up and the ‘iconic’ image that might be found in religious art. I also use 'found' images from sources such as magazines or the internet, and have undertaken a few portrait commissions. I am looking for a certain expression or 'gaze' that invites contemplation and reflection. I use thin glazes of paint on my canvases to build up a luminous, delicate quality. The scale of my larger paintings (up to two or three metres in width) directly relates to the idea of a cinema screen and also elevates them to the status of icon (always larger than life), both in the sense of an object of devotion and a 'screen icon', perhaps a modern equivalent. The process of the translation of the photographic image into the medium of oil painting, with all its art-historical and cultural connotations, gives the images a new context from which to view them.
