Airgeadóir
Four Centuries of Cork Silver and Gold
To celebrate Cork City’s tenure as European Capital of Culture,
a loan exhibition of silver and
gold items made in Cork City, and the county towns of Youghal and Kinsale,
over a period of
four hundred years has been assembled. The result - Airgeadóir
- is an historic collection
providing a unique opportunity for visitors to appreciate the sheer
breadth and craftsmanship
achieved by Cork silversmiths and goldsmiths.
Cork silver-making reached its highest level of expression in the period
1700-1820, helped by
the incorporation of The Company of Goldsmiths of Cork in 1656 and had
another significant
flowering in the twentieth century. The items in the Airgeadóir
exhibition have been lent from
museums, church authorities, public bodies, companies and private collections
in Ireland and
abroad.
A full colour book, co-authored by John R. Bowen and Conor O'Brien has
been published to
coincide with the exhibition.
