Factory Records' artists, who last played together, at the ICA, on New

'Extraordinary...I urge you to get a ticket' Observer 'astonishing ' Daily
Telegraph 'A film of raw power' **** Total Film Winner Golden Bear - Berlin
Film Festival 2003 Torn from the headlines, Michael Winterbottom's compelling
new film follows Jamal, a young Afghan, as he embarks on a hazardous overland
trip from the refugee camp at Peshawar through Iran, Turkey, Italy and
France to Sangatte and into the heart of London where he becomes 'M1187511'.
Winterbottom and his brilliant writer Tony Grisoni have struck a fine
balance between the fictional and documentary elements of the film and
they give us cause to see behind the headlines at the broader political
and moral concerns. Dir Michael Winterbottom, UK 2002, 89 mins, English

Thomas Pynchon: A Journey into the Mind of [P.]
'One of American literature's true masters' Rick Moody Unravelling the
enigma of the reclusive Thomas Pynchon (b.1937), one of the most influential
but least public writers of our time, the Dubinis' compelling documentary
makes spirited use of archive photographs, historical documents, news
footage and interviews with Pynchon's friends and fanatics. Spiralling
around themes of paranoiac conspiracies and mind-control experiments,
culminating in an account of an extraordinary lookalike event and the
devastating CNN news footage of Pynchon snatched on the streets, the film
presents a wonderful feast of Pynchonalia served up with a sense of humour
and a generous helping of music by the Residents. Dir Fosco & Donatello

Human Nature
Super sneak screening of visually inventive Gondry's daring debut feature.
An adaptation of Charlie Kaufman's script produced by Spike Jonze, the
duo behind Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. A hair-raising, odd-ball
comedy led by a superb cast (Tim Robbins, Patricia Arquette, Rhys Ifans)
clearly having fun with the wildly fertile script. Tim Robbins is researcher
Nathan Bronfman, with an unhealthy obsession for perfect manners and whose
life's project is 'to civilise' a wild man. Cue the feral and sex obsessed
Puff
(Ifans) and Arquette as Nathan's girlfriend Lila. Full of explosive scenes
of visual brilliance - a delectably insane first feature. Dir Michel Gondry,

My Beautiful Girl, Mari
Grand Prix Winner 2002 Annecy International Animated Film -Best Feature
The Koreans are coming! This stunningly beautiful feature debut is a highly
original cinematic fantasy that leads the challenge on Disney's and indeed
Japanese anime's supremacy in animated features. It centres on Namoo,
a boy in a seaside village struggling with feelings of loss and worry
whose only friend Junho will move to Seoul come summer's end. He goes
exploring with his cat and discovers a magical marble stone in an old
lighthouse. It is a truly remarkable work with a highly distinctive style,
which will lead Korean animation into a new era on the worldwide stage.
Not to be missed! Dir Lee Sung-Gang, Korea 2002, 80 mins

Girls on Film
Four distinct music video and film directors, Elaine Constantine, Sophie
Muller, Dawn Shadforth and Floria Sigismondi are the focus of this programme
in a riposte to those who challenge that there is a dearth of female talent
in this field. From Shadforth's finely choreographed promos (Kylie Minogue,
Primal Scream, All Seeing Eye), Sigismondi's highly stylised videos (Marilyn
Manson, Sigor Ros, Amon Tobin), the prolific Sophie Muller (Pink, Blur,
Eurythmics) and acclaimed photographer turned director Elaine Constantine,
this programme emphasises the breadth and depth of female creativity in
this field, (see also 'Talks' for Girls on Film Panel). 75 minutes approx.

Antonio Damasio and Susie Orbach in conversation
Feelings are the continuous background thrum in our minds. But what are
they for? And how might they help us to understand who we are? Are joy
and sorrow - so often seen as an 'extra' to human life - really the cornerstones
of survival? Do the processes which evolution has designed not only preserve
life, but also motivate and shape our greatest cultural achievements?
And can the elucidation of the neurobiology of feeling and emotion cast
light on the 'mind-body problem'? Tonight neuroscientist Antonio Damasio
is in conversation with Susie Orbach. Susie Orbach is a psychoanalyst,
visiting professor at the LSE and writer, whose books include Towards
Emotional Literacy. Damasio's most recent book, Looking for Spinoza, is
out this month. £8, £7 Concs. £6 ICA Members Cinema
