Seeing red – the art of Martin Alton |
From the 28th June VIEW in Thames Ditton is showing an exhibition of provocative contemporary work by artist Martin Alton. Behind the rich colours and lush textures rests a visual poetry, sometimes simple, sometimes disturbing but always thought-provoking. Martin has been an artist for over twenty years and his work is collected in the United Kingdom, South Africa and the United States. “All the paintings are personal”, says the artist, “but I guess we all share similar anxieties.” By alternating between the abstract and representational the work plays the viewer with shocking results. The main work on show titled ‘Our own wilderness’ comprises of five separate canvases that form one vast painting totalling nearly five metres across. Martin’s art is about coming to terms with one’s inner-self in a busy and competitive world. “I need to take stock of everything that I have experienced in my life then, through osmosis, the paintings unfold – the final result always surprises me. Experimentation is a key force in the work, I prefer to take risks with the direction of a painting.” View is Thames
Ditton’s newest art gallery, specialising in original contemporary
art for sale. Displaying a variety of works, the main exhibits are paintings
but there are also displays of photographs, sculpture and ceramics. 020 8972
