FILM LONDON THROWS A LIFE LINE TO FILM CULTURE IN LONDON’S BOROUGHS

FILM LONDON THROWS A LIFE LINE TO FILM CULTURE IN LONDON’S BOROUGHS

Film London has announced the nine recipients of over £70,000 of funding through its Education and Audience Development Fund in its inaugural year. This twice yearly award is inviting new applications from organisations until the deadline of 30th July.

The recipients will receive between £2,000 and £10,000 in funding to improve film and moving image culture across London’s boroughs. The successful and inspired projects include a Cyber Bus to tour Bromley, after-school film clubs in Lewisham, a film festival to celebrate the diversity of Elephant & Castle and an exciting animation project which could find the makers of the next Wallace & Gromit among London’s school pupils and even see their work screened on Sky TV.

The selected projects provide innovative solutions to issues such as access to diverse cinema for communities, engaging new and younger audiences for film and working to provide a deeper understanding of cinema across the London boroughs.

The Education and Audience Development Fund is the result of RIFE (Regional Investment Fund of England) Lottery Funds, distributed by Film London on behalf of the UK Film Council.

It is highly recommended for organisations intending to seek funding through the next round of this scheme to attend the free information seminars which will take place across London next month.

Suburban Shorts
Bromley Mytime has been awarded £6,015 to set up a seminar programme in which film-makers screen and discuss their films with groups of students from three local schools. Students then undertake a practical film-making workshop to produce their own films themed around citizenship. A gala presentation of these projects will take place in June. Films will be screened to new audiences outside the traditional cinema setting with the ingenious use of a touring cyber bus which will provide access to film across the borough.

Portobello Film Festival 2004
£7,000 has been awarded to this annual local film festival which has also established a year-round showcase for film-makers. Two weeks of summer screenings culminate in an outdoor screening event attended by 13,000 last year. Local unemployed volunteers help to organise the festival gaining practical work experience in the film industry. Additionally film-makers will give a series of education talks on film and film-making to festival attendees.

Raindance East Film Festival, now in its third year, receives £10,000 of funding to support the six different strands of the festival. These include independent and international cinema reflecting the diverse communities of East London and a platform for emerging local film talent. Raindance East and Film Education are collaborating in a schools screening programme themed around cultural diversity and identity which will connect with key areas of the National Curriculum.

Elefest Film Festival 2004
A contribution of £5,000 will enable this developing South London festival to screen a wide selection of films which reflect the diverse community of Southwark at the Coronet Cinema in Elephant and Castle including British, Latin American, Bengali, Somali and Irish film-makers.

London Kurdish Film Festival
£6,000 has been provided to support London’s only showcase for new Kurdish cinema. This increasingly popular film festival screens a selection of Kurdish feature films, short films and documentaries at the Rio Cinema, Dalston.

Lewisham Cineclub Network
This borough wide initiative receives £10,000 of funding to ensure that every secondary school in Lewisham establishes an after-school film club which will provide access to films and film-making for the students.

London Docs
DocHouse has established a successful screening programme at two London venues providing London-wide access to documentary film. The £12,200 grant will enable this ambitious and exciting initiative to respond to the growing popularity in theatrical distribution for documentary film.

Animate
Film and Video Workshop’s project enables four London Boroughs (Camden, Islington, Wandsworth and Enfield) to share in the award of £10,000 for a series of professionally led school workshops for budding young film makers and animators. The resulting films will be publicly screened and will be broadcast on Sky later this year.

Return to the Promised Land
Armenian Cinema since IndependenceA grant of £7,070 has been awarded to this Armenian Film Season which takes place this autumn at The Other Cinema. The festival programme embraces a broad selection of Armenian cinema including feature films, short films, documentaries and artist’s films. This is the first London initiative focusing on Armenian cinema for over 20 years. There will be supporting talks and panel discussions with international guests.
