Artists Statement

For me painting is distortion and filtering, taking reality and turning it into something more personal. I have a strong urge to paint, it is a release and a therapy.

My landscapes are often stormy, rainy and indistinct. I use hints of light to indicate hope in otherwise grey and moody canvases.
My abstract paintings deal with decay, entropy and the passage of time, particularly relating to the human body. The inevitable failure of the human body is a preoccupation that I express and explore through canvas.

Many of my paintings evolve from photographs and the process often starts when I frame the image with the camera. I'm particularly fond of cheap digital cameras as these often produce poor quality, low-resolution images. In formal photography this lack of detail and distortion would be disappointing. I find that it helps me add my own levels of abstraction to the final painted image.
