Artist Statement:

'My photographic study is based around the decay of food stuffs- in particular I am experimenting with the degradation of both fresh fruit and vegetables.

Presently I am involved with the material breakdown of such foods to enable me to photograph the subject's base elements at a macro scale. This comments on the way we see that which we think we know- the complacency of a life time of one sided exposure to decay. As well as this it acts as a celebration of such foods throughout and beyond their 'acceptable'
life.

By seeing beyond the initial aesthetic of that which is deemed 'unacceptable' we are able to have a richer aesthetic experience. Thus we see the beauty inherent in the truth of the subject.

This series looks beyond the wider reality of the subject and the preconceptions we as a society place on that reality. Decaying and putrefying food matter confuse socially accepted categories thus becoming 'matter out of place' or more precisely matter without a place. Thus these images are an exploration of this matter becoming enabled with such a 'place'.
Referenced through their topographical aesthetic is the ever present existence of the same organic matter that makes up so much of our world, thus heightening our own fragility.

My photographs are taken using a medium format camera, macro lens and extension tubes- this setup allows for ultra close-up images, thus enabling a point of view and aesthetic that is rarely seen and considered.
These images offer waste, with all its boundaries and restrictions, a value, thus commenting on and questioning our own ideals.'
