Artist Statement:
I am inspired by old science fiction novels and B movie film sets to create these dystopian landscapes. Through the accumulation of hundreds of images collected from newspapers, old magazines from the 60s and 70s and some of my own photographs I build 3 dimensional collages that I then photograph and manipulate on the computer.
Through the mixture of low tech cut and paste techniques and digital manipulation I aim to create images which are somehow evocative of the past but could also play on current threats of environmental disaster.
The illusory aspect of the work is important, I like to play on the ambiguous sense of scale and distance between each element in the images, the spaces are never quite believable as real but draw in the viewer in a way similar to the obviously constructed spaces of old film sets.

Sarah Harvey was born in London in 1981. She completed her Education at Chelsea School of Art and Newcastle University, graduating in 2004. She has a studio at the Bow Arts Trust in East London.
“At Newcastle, I won the Bartlett Travel Scholarship which I used to travel to Florence and surrounding areas of Tuscany. It was during this visit that I discovered and photographed the beautiful green swimming pool that would be the inspiration for a whole new collection of works.
My paintings are sometimes composed of 3 – 4 photo images that I have bought together with the use of computer technology to create other images. I have been using lines within my paintings and also the use of multiple canvases to reflect this. I also believe this helps to create different areas of depth within the paintings.
My greatest fascination is movement, and painting the figure in water completely encompasses this. I love the way the water moves in so many ways - around, along and over the body, causing the light to break up the figure that we see. The figure becomes fragmented and is seen by the human eye in ways that are totally unexpected. This excites me tremendously.
Each photo that I take as reference for my paintings is unique and individual.”

“Are you thinking what they’re thinking?”
You’ll never know will you because it’s physically impossible to fully know someone else’s identity. This became clear to me as I started collecting notes that people dropped in the course of their daily life. I’d never met the people whose notes I was finding but suddenly I felt I had an insight into a stranger’s life. The notes took on a life of their own which it became my intention to preserve and celebrate.
My collecting differs from that of the museum curator as mine is entirely random dictated by the random encounters of my own daily life rather than any objective strategy- I simply picked up the notes where I found them. When the collection grew, I had to think about displaying them to enhance their personal and expressive qualities and protect their fragility, hence my grid of boxes, each an individual incubator and life support system for the note it contains. The lights that illuminate the notes dazzle the eye so that the notes, like the identities they represent are both revelation and mystery.

Artist Statement
My sculptures explore ideas relating to growth. The word has positive meanings concerning nature’s abundance springtime and personal development.
It can also denote a morbid formation such as a cancer or tumour in the human body. This ambiguity of meaning and the resulting tension is pivotal to the work. Elements of humour and absurdity make the sculptures approachable and the viewer can hopefully relate to some of the symbolism employed.
Fabric is key to my practice. It’s sensuous, tactile qualities are familiar to everyone and may provoke strong memories of time and place. By using sewing, thread and patchwork, in both the assemblages and wall pieces, I’m employing techniques that were traditionally associated with women’s lives.
There is a questioning of the undervalued status of everyday materials and a wish to give franchise to skills and subject matter that were historically excluded from “high” art.
