Artist Statement: My work is largely autobiographical. I draw on past experiences and their ramifications for my inspiration, and use various moulds taken from my own body to convey the personal issues I am addressing. Using the figure in this way indulges my life long fascination with the human body. I have created forms and surfaces with distortions and imperfections to denote topics that concern me such as body image, self worth and depression. I also use representations of bottles in various guises as a way to comment on alcohol and its relationship to depression. Working in an intuitive way, allowing myself to be led by materials and processes I aim to create pieces that are aesthetically pleasing but have undertones of unease. The concepts behind this work are powerful but I wish to convey them in subtle ways so that people can bring their own ideas to the pieces. I believe that the idea that there may be things hidden under the surface is one that intrigues and allures.
