Artist Statement

I was born in the North of England where I grew up by the sea and in the country. I work as a full time artist from my studio in North Wales Being half Danish I spend a lot of time there, inspired by the flat landscapes, different light and the experience and observations of my immediate environment.

I trained in textiles, concentrating on layering fabrics and translating marks and textures through print and stitch to create interesting textile pieces. I explore this process also whilst painting. As I work the canvas, flat colours next to built up textures are overlaid by washes, marks and details. The details and marks in the paintings are those left by manmade alterations to the landscape or accidental marks on the earth’s surface – windows, doors, chimneys, telephone wires and pathways all get recorded over blocks and texture. I particularly like the winter months to paint, especially on overcast days as the colours and feature soften and become more muted, and I save the summertime for trips to the seaside.

My other style of work is a more commercial, interiors based range of circles paintings. The simplicity of the shapes, lines and colours can be soothing and calming to the eye but as they are inspired by music the brush strokes sometimes literally dance across the canvas in a very energetic way.

The combination of acrylic, oil, pencil and pastel create exciting works on canvas.
