Artist Statement: I aim to capture something of the essence of the philosophical 'beautiful and sublime' through my abstract oil paintings. My MA dissertation was entitled 'Is the aesthetic experience revelatory of an exclusive modality of truth?' I believe that art has a unique ability to arrest our senses and conceptions through a fusion of beauty and truth. It is the inimitable nature of the sublime aesthetic experience to cause the viewer to hover between states of elevation and devastation. It signifies the rift between reason and imagination. To me, this affords a momentary glimpse between the cracks of everyday experience to reveal the mesh that directs our perceptions. This offers an insight into the nature of being from within the present. Everything is flux. I find that abstraction is the medium that expresses most fluently my ambition to connect to this truth. I draw from the artistic language of Cy Twombly, and look to Kant and Lyotard philosophically. I use the broad themes of light, space, colour and form to explore my passions for painting and aesthetics. "
