Artist Statement

My work considers the relationship between temporal issues and the self.

In order to recover this fundamental self, as the unsophisticated consciousness would perceive it, a vigorous effort of analysis is necessary, which will isolate the fluid inner states from there images, first refracted, than solidified in homogeneous space. In other words, our perceptions, sensations, emotions and ideas occur under two aspects: the one clear and precise, but impersonal; the other confused, ever changing and inexpressible, because language cannot get hold of it without arresting its mobility or fit it into common place forms without making it into public property.”

Henri Bergson, “Time and Free Will,” Dover publications Inc., New York, p129

The ideas behind the work I make often germinate with only one element of the final piece in place, (from initial idea to physical creation in some instances may take up to two years), and then on the resolution, the initial element may play only a minor role and is perhaps even excluded entirely. Within individual pieces the combination of elements that express the temporal experience visually are combined in a manner which challenges understanding with everyday logic and so when successful overcomes the problem of verbal and written language “arresting its mobility”, when describing the concept. This enables the work to penetrate the “clear and precise, but impersonal,” outer shell of the self and offers perhaps a small view into “the other confused, ever changing and inexpressible,” self.
