Artist Statement:

The places shown in the work are all within walking distance of my family home. They depict locations and objects specific to my personal history and yet paradoxically are generic enough to elicit recognition from a wider audience. The paintings allow voyeurism; they present the viewer with empty unpeopled spaces: a stilled narrative. History is embedded in the scrawled graffiti and neglected domestic objects.
My own love-hate relationship with the subject matter is indicated in the apparently straightforward painting style and intentionally awkward compositions, which simultaneously acknowledge and negate the autobiographical content providing an emotional distance. As the viewer approaches the work, the seemingly photographic representations give way to a painterly economy of mark - a photographic shorthand.
There is an overwhelming melancholy to this work; it invites contemplation upon the ephemeral qualities of the locations and evokes a sense of unease. It aims to communicate the weight of the atmosphere and to suggest drama through the intensity of silence.
