Artist Statement The subject of my work is the shape and form of the industrial past, the effect of colour and textured surfaces translated into art and the transient nature of man-made materials. The painted canvas surfaces are heavily textured and layered using a mix of encaustic wax and paint. Scraped back in areas to expose the underlying coloured layers which are polished, scratched and enhanced using fingers, rags and palette knives. Manipulated using the natural plasticity of the wax and paint to reflect the reaction of chemicals in the polluted atmosphere and the industrial environment. Finally I apply a layer of varnish to create areas of brightness on the uneven surface and to fix the heavy encaustic. My constructions are generally built on deep platforms and represent the shapes found in the industrial world. I use a variety of materials to create a feeling or partial recognition of artefacts and plant to be found in an industrial society. The materials are hard-edged and solid. They are directly under my control they are logical and conform edge to edge. Unlike paint they cannot merge. Despite the difference in the two working methods they sit comfortably together. They are from a single origin. Roy Isaacs
