Artist Statement:
I studied Illustration at the University of Wolverhampton, graduating in 2000. I then completed a further year at the University of Central England to qualify as an art teacher. At present I work part-time as a supply teacher in both primary and secondary schools. The “part-time” bit is my own choice as this gives me the opportunity to spend part of each week painting and drawing, either for personal pleasure and development or even the occasional commission.

I enjoy experimenting widely with different media and styles including monoprint, pastel, watercolour and others. This is because I find the unique qualities of each different medium enables me to treat a variety of subjects in what feels like the most appropriate way, without placing restrictions on the style in which I wish to work. For example, I use monoprint for drawing buildings and street scenes, pastel for close-up work (portraits, flowers, stills from films) and watercolour for studies of animals. Most of the pictures shown are samples of my work using monoprint, which retains the line in a way that I feel keeps the image fresh and exciting. I make my own egg tempera, and using this creates transparent layers of colour without obscuring the lines underneath. I then paint with bleach to pull back the light areas. I have also included some examples of my pastel work.

With persistence, and the necessary element of some luck, I hope in future to increase the amount of time I can spend on my work, in order to both progress further artistically and establish myself as a working Illustrator.
