Artist Statement:

Colour is important to me as a painter and it is as a painter that I come to video. The colour of the work
is influenced by the distortion and breakdown of the digital video image at the limits of its parameters,

Slowing the video of my subjects to 1 or 2 frames per second has allowed for the each instant and every
nuance of emotion to be explored, allowing for portraits that capture the character of an individual
and that change over a period of time. My video images have been heavily influenced my painting and the form and essence of video is now too referenced within my painting. Captivated by the static image for so long, my paintings are beginning to explore motion, resulting in video that is a sequence of static images and paintings with a sense of movement that share a
common aesthetic.

With my video installation, back projection of a the image onto a hanging muslin screen gives a surface you can walk around, touch: an image that ripples and moves in a breeze.

Bill Viola has been my biggest influence, but unlike Viola my images are silent, they are not intended to
be watched like a film, but engaged with in a similar way to a painting.
