London
fashion week
London
fashion week is not known for its Armani or Prada, but you
can always rely on the more interesting established designers like Julian
Macdonald and Betty Jackson as well as many of London’s cutting
edge new and newish fashionistas. This didn’t mean that the shows
were busy, in fact they were noticeably quiet this year. Maybe the pressure
on fashion houses to get seasons out earlier and earlier leaves us uninspired

The Peter Saville Show
23 May-14 Sep 2003
From
the Design Museum official website: "One of the most influential
designers working today, Peter Saville has been a cult figure in both
graphic design and pop culture for 25 years since the start of his long
collaboration with the bands Joy Division and New Order as art director
of Factory Records, the legendary independent record label. He has also
created iconic fashion images in his work for Yohji Yamamoto, Christian
Dior and, now, Stella McCartney and Givenchy. This first retrospective
of Peter Saville's work, drawn from his private archive, will trace his
career from Factory Records to his recent multimedia projects while tracing
the history of contemporary graphic design and the story of how style
culture hit the High Street."

Stephen Gill
14 Sep
Hackney Wick is a bleak and desolate place which fifteen years ago boasted
a speedway track and greyhound stadium and has new aspirations as a site
of the 2012 Olympic Games. In the meantime, on Sundays, it has become
home to the 'black market', which has grown to giant proportions.
In January, the young British photographer Stephen Gill purchased a Bakelite
camera at the market for 50p and has used it, over several months, to
document The Wick's strangely self-sufficient world and the frenetic activity
of the people who occupy it. A plastic camera with a plastic case and
lens, the camera has no focus or exposure controls. Its no-frills technology
mirrors the functionality of the market itself and Gill's resulting photographs
exploit the spontaneous effects of the camera to reflect the energy and
chaos and - faced with closure in July when the market's licence expires
- the fragility of the environment.
